The governance of Spanish gambling trade association Cejuego has said that it will back the ‘drastic measures’ enforced by Spain’s newly formed PSOE-Podemos coalition government on licensed incumbents.

The trade body, which counts Spanish heritage gambling firms Codere, Cirsa, Grupo Orenes and R. Franco amongst its members, has underlined its support for PSOE-Podemos signing off on a long-awaited Royal Decree implementing reforms on Spanish gambling advertising.

Speaking to national media, Cejuego President Alejandro Landaluce stated that ‘this is something we have repeatedly asked from different governments’, before backing planned advertising reforms on the ‘scheduling, coverage and messaging of gambling’.

Cejuego has also shown support support for gambling’s regulatory supervision being transferred to Spain’s Department of Consumer Affairs – ‘so long as legal certainty is strengthened for the development of our business activities’.

Handed an expanded portfolio to oversee the development of gambling regulatory development, the PSOE-Podemos coalition government has confirmed the appointment of Podemos deputy Alberto Garzon as new Minister of Consumer Affairs.

All Spanish gambling stakeholders now wait for PSOE-Podemos to publish the governing terms of its ‘coalition programme’ in which agreed reforms will be officially disclosed.

Last week, PSOE informed Spanish media of inbound concrete directives to comprehensively monitor gambling engagements across all gambling across land-based and digital verticals.

Last November, Spanish online gambling incumbents agreed to operate under the terms of a new self-enforced ‘code-of-conduct’’ mandate developed by trade body jDigital, designed to establish new marketing standards and significantly lower all-round betting advertising coverage.
