RocketPlay has completed its summer Cosmic Department of Joy campaign, gathering 15, 000+ player responses around one question: what does joy from the game mean to players.
The answers showed that winning remains an important part of the iGaming experience — but it is far from the only one. Alongside wins and rewards, players repeatedly mentioned anticipation, relaxation, favourite games, fun features and the feeling of switching off for a moment.
After reviewing the responses, RocketPlay identified 4 main themes behind player Joy:
- Reward — 46.8%
Wins, bonuses and unexpected rewards that create memorable moments during play. - Escape — 18.8%
Relaxation, switching off, personal time and a short break from everyday routine. - Thrill — 11.5%.
Anticipation, excitement, adrenaline and the feeling that something can happen at any moment. - Play — 18.3%.
Favourite games, features, discovery, variety and the simple enjoyment of the gameplay itself.
For the brand, these responses point to a broader view of player experience. In iGaming, entertainment is often described through mechanics, bonuses and outcomes. However, the Cosmic Department of Joy showed that the experience is also shaped by mood, expectation, discovery and the emotional context around play.
“For a long time, iGaming has been very good at turning player experience into numbers. RTP, volatility and conversion tell us a lot, but they don’t tell the whole story,” said Alex Martin, PR Manager at RocketPlay. “Player-centric marketing starts when the emotion behind those numbers becomes part of the conversation. With the Joy campaign, we wanted players themselves to define what makes the experience meaningful.”
Player responses supported this broader picture. Some described Joy as “the thrill of the win”, while others called it “a break from reality” or “switching off for a bit.”
The Cosmic Department of Joy was created as a seasonal RocketPlay campaign where players became Joy Ambassadors and shared their own view of Joy. Throughout the mission, the Cosmic Joy Index acted as a public visual indicator, rising as more players joined and became part of the campaign story.
