Gambling in the state continues to climb, thanks to the recent start of National Football League.

West Virginia’s sports betting market experienced further growth in four weeks to September 28th, as licensed operators reported combined revenue of US$3.8 million for the period. Punters wagered a total of US$25.6 million on sports during last month, which coincided with the start of the National Football League season on September 5th, winning US$21.4 million in total.

Penn National Gaming’s Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, which runs its sportsbook in partnership with DraftKings, remains the market leader in West Virginia by some margin, posting US$2.6 million in revenue from a handle of US$17.9 million. Hollywood Casino enjoyed a particularly successful week in the seven days to September 7th, during which revenue totaled US$1.2 million, just a bit les of the state’s US$1.3 million over the four weeks to August 31st.

Meanwhile, the William Hill Sports Book at Mountaineer Casino ranked second, with revenue of US$575,912, with punters wagering a total of US$3.5 million. The Greenbrier private resort saw revenue for the period reach US$531,337 after it processed US$4.3 million in sports bets. The Delaware North-owned Mardi Gras and Wheeling venues remained inactive after shuttering sports betting in March amid a dispute with technology partner Miomni. Both venues made minor losses as a result of previously placed bets. Mardi Gras posted a loss of US$706.75 for the month, primarily due to paying out US$622.75 in winning bets during the week ended September 7th. Wheeling made a loss of US$195.25 for the month.
